Lander student’s slogan wins national contest

Lander University senior Anthony Montgomery’s submission in a national T-shirt slogan competition was selected as the best among students at more than 400 colleges nationwide. The contest, hosted by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and “The New York Times,” invited students to submit a slogan for this year’s American Democracy Project T-shirts. †

“There were many submissions received,†and†all were†e xcellent,” stated Mary-Kathryn McKenna, AASCU American Democracy Project coordinator.†“However, the national ADP office along with†the†creatives†from “The New York Times” decided†that (Anthony’s) was the best.”

Lander Provost, Dr. Leonard Lundquist, who brought the ADP to Lander in 2003, said, “Lander’s ADP task force, which is led by Dr. Robert Stevenson, has done a remarkable job.††These T-shirts, with the Lander logo on them, will be distributed across the United States.”

Stevenson is an associate professor of mass communication at Lander, a state university with 3,000 students.

Montgomery, a senior mass communication major from Greenwood, has served as a student member of Lander’s ADP team for two years. Describing how Lander’s T-shirt slogan came about, he said, “Dr. Stevenson was a big help. We talked about the goals and mission of the ADP at Lander and at the national level, and after a couple hours of brainstorming, I had an idea that felt like a perfect fit.”

Montgomery’s slogan, “‘…By the people for the people’…It’s our turn,” became the winning entry.

“Anthony truly deserves this recognition,” said Stevenson. “He has worked hard for the Lander ADP.”

Stevenson, chair of Lander’s ADP task force, explained that the American Democracy Project is a nationwide initiative to promote civic engagement among college students and to produce graduates committed to significant participation in their respective communities.

Montgomery and Lander University will be recognized at the ADP National Meeting in Snowbird, Utah, June 15-17, where the†new T-shirts will be unveiled.†Stevenson will also be presenting an educational session at the conference titled, “ADP at a small liberal arts institution, success on a shoestring.”
