The Montessori Teacher Education Program
Thank you for your interest in Lander University's Montessori Teacher Education Program. Lander
offers the only university based Montessori teacher preparation course in South Carolina, leading
to certification by the American Montessori Society, the largest and most widely recognized
Montessori organization in the world. Our Montessori teacher education programs for level ages 2
1/2 -6 and grades 1 - 3 are accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Commission for Teacher
Education (MACTE). Classes for ages 2 1/2 - 6 are offered on Lander's Greenwood campus. Classes for
grades 1 - 3 are offered at the University Center at Greenville.
Our program begins a new cycle each January. It meets on scheduled weekends from January
through April. During the months of June and July classes meet daily for four to five weeks,
depending on the certification level being pursued. At the end of the academic phase teachers are
then ready to begin the practicum phase, in which they work in an approved Montessori setting for
an academic year. Four weekend seminars are scheduled during the practicum phase. Students who are
not already employed in a Montessori program are encouraged to arrange their own practicum site in
a location nearby. We will offer assistance to students who need it with these arrangements.
