Conceptual Model
Professional Instructional Leader
The conceptual model guiding the teacher education program at
Lander University is the
"Professional Instructional Leader." The faculty of the School of Education, in
conjunction with faculty associated with general education and content preparation of education
students, developed this model to serve as a guide in planning, implementing, assessing, and
improving the teacher education program. These constructs are consistent with research noted in
"The Professional Role of the Teacher,"
Education Canada, John Bergen, 1993, and The Holmes Group, "Tomorrow’s Teachers," 1986, and
NNER Site Reports: "Work in Progress," 1994.
The
Professional Instructional Leader
will:
- Integrate content knowledge & skills of scholarly inquiry to teach all students
- Plan, provide, assess learning experiences supported by research, knowledge of best practices, & professional standards
- Collaborate with diverse populations, including students, educators, community members, & families for the benefit of all learners
- Engage in reflection & professional development to assess & improve content knowledge & pedagogical skills
- Exhibit dispositions that address the needs of all students & provide leadership to the profession
Students enrolled in the initial certification education program
in the School of Education at Lander University are expected to exhibit these characteristics, to
demonstrate/model these skills and behaviors, and to embrace these dispositions. The goals of the
university, the goals/objectives and the strategies articulated in the program are consistent with
the conceptual model of the education unit which is the
Professional Instructional Leader.
