Department of English
& Foreign Language
Where can I use
an English degree?
An English degree prepares you for a variety of careers, such as law, theology, business, public relations, mass media and public service. Or perhaps you'd like to educate the English students of tomorrow by becoming a teacher in a secondary school or college. Whatever your aspirations, the courses you take as an English major will help you develop communication skills that will make you marketable.
Are there job opportunities
for Spanish majors?
Absolutely! Spanish-speaking graduates are very marketable due to growth in the Spanish-speaking population in the United States. Lander Spanish graduates are now pursuing careers in business, social work, and communications.
About the Department
The Department encompasses the disciplines of English, modern languages (French, German, and Spanish), and humanities. Majors are offered in English and in Spanish and minors in English, French, Latin American Studies, Spanish, and writing.
Courses in English and foreign languages are concerned with the ideas of civilization as expressed in the language and literature of the world. These courses address several areas of the general education program, and they are also excellent electives.
Courses in humanities help students attain
- The ability to organize ideas, to write correctly and effectively, and to carry out library research systematically;
- An awareness of their own cultural tradition through the study of literature of the Western world;
- The ability to understand and enjoy literature through a study of published interpretation and criticism and through their own analysis and writing
- An awareness of the ways in which a number of major writers have viewed the human condition and the adventures of man's mind and spirit; and
- An understanding of the essential unity of knowledge and an awareness of the inter-relatedness of the various disciplines
A grade of C or better is required in all courses applied to major and minor programs in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.
