The Spanish Program at Lander University

Increases in South Carolina's Hispanic population and the expansion of many South Carolina industries into international markets have drawn attention to the critical need for university graduates who have a thorough and practical proficiency in the Spanish language. In response to that need, Lander offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish that provides students with skills and knowledge that will prepare them for a variety of career options.

As a Spanish major , you will gain proficiency in the four skills traditionally required of foreign language students—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In fact, when you graduate, you will be able to carry on an effective conversation with a native speaker and to read and write Spanish at a level acceptable to native speakers. But our program goes beyond these basics.

As a Spanish major, you will study and experience Hispanic culture to a point where you will be able to distinguish cultural similarities and The W.E. Troublefield, Jr. Atrium in the Marion P. Carnell Learning Center differences among various Hispanic societies. You will study Hispanic art, literature and other aesthetic expressions by Hispanic masters. You will be required to spend some time studying in a Spanish-speaking country, and you will be trained to use tools of modern technology for tasks such as translation, composition, and multimedia presentations.

Our major prepares students to be ready for M.A.T. programs in Spanish education at other institutions.

With a very low student-faculty ratio in upper level Spanish classes, you can be sure you'll get the individual attention and advising you need to build a schedule that will best help you reach your career goals. You'll study under a faculty, most of whom hold doctoral degrees, with a variety of interest and experiences in foreign language study and usage.

We invite you to immerse yourself in another world--the world of Cortez, Picasso, El Greco and Cervantes—and to begin that immersion at Lander.

Students majoring in Spanish have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the diverse cultural constitution of the Spanish speaking peoples. The Spanish major includes the study of the literary, spoken, and cultural expressions of Hispanic civilizations in order to develop writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills in Spanish.

The program is designed to provide students with skills and knowledge which will prepare them for a variety of career options.  Students may choose curriculum patterns which will prepare them to undertake graduate study in literature or to pursue a career in one of the professional fields such as business, public relations, or public service.

The program of studies will enhance the students' appreciation of our multicultural environment not only through the study of Hispanic literature and culture but also through first-hand experience. Students must experience a significant personal immersion in a different culture. Thereafter they will be required to demonstrate their advanced language skills in the use of modern technologies. The use of technology will be an essential tool for those who major in Spanish, regardless of their particular career goals; all need to become aware of the various uses of technology in foreign language communication, including translation, composition, and multimedia presentation.
