Dr. Robert K. Phillips
Lander emeritus professor of English
"As an English teacher, I take joy watching students make connections among intellectual, imaginative and physical matters. I love to take students outdoors to see environments similar to those in the poetry and fiction we study. Whether summiting a peak near Cold Mountain or hiking a wetland that evokes a Zora Neale Hurston novel, students get a sense of the actual symbols and settings that occur in the writings. A few years ago, one such hiking group startled a buck. Later the student in the lead, referring to Faulkner's Go Down, Moses, wrote, 'I felt like I was in the novel.'"
