Lander’s Procedures for Removing Peer-to-Peer File Sharing From Its Network
9/22/04

Because of the illegality of sharing copyrighted material without permission, and the negative impact on network performance, the network is monitored for file sharing programs such as Kaazaa or Morpheus.  Whenever this type of activity is discovered, or reported by outside agencies such as the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) the network connection to the suspected computer will be terminated immediately.  The student will receive a letter indicating this is what has happened.  A copy of this letter will also be sent to Judicial Services, who will follow the procedures for first offenders, see Student Handbook.

It is the student’s responsibility to remove the offending file share program and to prove that this has been done.  In order to be granted access to the University’s network, the student should contact Information Technology Services (ITS) at ext. 8151 to schedule an appointment to have his computer checked for the offending program.

This process could take up to two to three weeks, at which time the student will be without Internet connection in his residence hall room.  In some cases this will affect all the students in that room.  It is important for you to remove these programs and materials immediately from your computer in order to avoid the consequences of having your network connection disabled, or worse to be sued by the Recording Industry.  If you need help or information about how to remove these programs please contact ITS at ext. 8151.
