Student Computer Labs
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I log in to the computers in the labs?
In order to use the Student Computer Labs, you must first obtain your user name listed under
the "Personal Information" section in
Bearcat Web. Click on “View E-mail Addresses” where your e-mail
address will be listed. The first part of your Lander University issued e-mail address is
your user name. For example, goconnor@lander.edu = goconnor.
As of Fall 2008 the default password for
students
is in the form of
mmddssss
where mmdd is the month and date of your birth and ssss is the last four digits of your
social security number. For example, someone born on May 6, 1986 with 1234 as the last four
digits of their social would have a default password of 05061234. It is
strongly
recommended that you change your password when you first log into your account.
What is this print credit I keep hearing about?
In order to minimize wasteful printing and provide an optimal printing environment for
students doing coursework, a system is in place by which students are given a set amount of credit
each semester (currently $30.00) from which to print in the open access labs on campus.
Printing is currently five cents per page for black and white printing, and thirty cents per page
for color printing.
In the unlikely event that you run out of print credit before the end of the semester, you may
add, at your discretion, any amount of print credit by visiting the Business Office, located in LC
105 and making a payment. Please bring your receipt to William Barnhill in JL 303 or Glen
O'Connor in JL 319 and it will be added to your account. Payments made will rollover to
following semesters.
Why does printing take so long sometimes?
The two open access labs on campus print approximately 20,000 pages per week, and serve
hundreds of students daily. Although our black and white printers can print 50 pages per
minute, almost one per second, during peak times you may have to wait for your print job to
finish. We appreciate your patience during these times, and urge students to anticipate such
delays when looking to utilize the printers in the open access labs. Peak times include
breaks between classes, the hours during lunch (11am - 2pm) and dates surrounding midterm and final
exams.
What is the Printer Release Station?
In an effort to reduce the wait time for students printing in the labs, we have introduced a
new system in Fall 2009 to require students to be present at the printer when their documents are
printed. Students will log in to the release station with their username and password and
resume their paused print jobs. We hope that this will streamline the printing process and
help students receive their needed documents quicker. If you have any questions regarding the
Printer Release Station or how to use it, feel free to ask a student lab assistant or William
Barnhill in JL 303.
How do I change my password?
There are two ways to change your password:
- If you wish to change your password in one of the Student Computer Labs, first log in to a computer. After you have logged in, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Next click " Change Password...". You will be prompted to enter in your old password and type your new password two times. Your password must be at least 6 characters in length. REMEMBER your password! If you forget your password, you will have to show your Lander issued ID card to an ITS employee to have your password reset. Passwords are case-sensitive, if you type in UPPERCASE letters, then every time you wish to use a computer you must type in all UPPERCASE letters.
- If you wish to change your password on the web, log into the MyLander portal and select " Email". On the email page, select " Options" at the top of the page, then choose " Change Password" on the left hand side. Enter your old password and new password twice, then click Save at the top of the page. After changing your password, please Logout of the MyLander portal and log back in with your new credentials.
How do I add a printer to my laptop?
Student Lab Workers are happy to assist you in gaining access to the printers located in the open access labs on campus. Please note that your print credit will still be charged as if you were utilizing a workstation in the lab.
