Computer Transfer FAQ
Are you ready to make the move to your new computer?
You've gotten the word that you will be receiving a new university computer, so it's time to think about what you need to do to make sure that your files will be transferred from your existing computer and that your new computer will be configured for your work style.
What about my files and folders?
The first thing you'll want to do is to make sure that your document files are organized in your 'My Documents' folder. Both individual files and folders that you have created and stored in this folder will be moved to your new computer by ITS. Files and folders that you have created or saved to other sections of your computer (i.e.: your desktop) should be moved to your 'My Documents' folder prior to delivery of your new computer.
How about my Internet Favorites (Internet Explorer only)?
You've spent a good deal of time collecting and organizing Internet Favorites that you refer to often in class, in the course of performing your daily job, or when working on a research project. Your internet favorites will be moved to your new computer by ITS.
What about other software that I have loaded on my computer?
Software cannot typically be 'moved' from one computer to another, but must be re-installed on the new computer. If you or your department have purchased and loaded software beyond the suite supported by Lander University (Windows XP Professional Edition, the Microsoft Office Suite of Programs including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, InfoPath, Publisher, and FrontPage, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, Nortel Networks Contivity VPN Client, Symantec Client Security System, and (where necessary for job duties) Oracle Client Software) you are responsible for setting up this additional software on your computer. You can prepare for this by locating the CD-ROMs or DVDs that contain the program and any access keys or codes that were provided to you with the software.
Can my custom dictionary and templates I have created be moved to my new computer?
Yes! If you have customized the Word dictionary on your current computer to recognize terms specific to your academic discipline or if you have created templates for Word or other office programs, please mention this to the ITS technician at your transfer appointment and they will be moved to your new computer.
How about information for other applications?
If you have installed other applications (such as test bank software from the publisher of your text book), please let the ITS technician that comes to transfer your information to your new computer know. Where possible, ITS will move application data that you have created (such as tests that you have set up or used). Be aware that you will need to install the software that goes along with files you have created in order for your new computer to read those files.
How will I log on to my new computer?
Your Username and Password combination will not change with your new computer.
Will I still have access to e-mail that I have received?
E-mail that is stored in your Outlook Inbox or subfolders that you have created will be available to you on your new computer. If you have created e-mail archives, please let the ITS technician know during your transfer appointment.
Will I have access to shared drives used by my department?
At your transfer appointment, please let the ITS technician working with you know of any shared drives that you will need to be able to access.
Will I be able to print?
ITS will connect your new computer to any networked printers your department uses. ITS will help you set up and install a desktop printer in your office. Please have the installation/driver disk available at the time of your transfer appointment.
